Turmeric Root and The History | Eastern Medicine - Nutent Therapeutics

Turmeric is a strong spice that has been used for thousands of years throughout history as a complement to food and also as a potent medicine with a variety of associated benefits. Modern science has been able to tell us that while turmeric is incredibly healthy and versatile, in particular the compound called curcumin that is present within turmeric that confers many benefits to the consumer.

The History of Turmeric Root

Turmeric root has been used medicinally for over 4000 years. What is a popular food trend in the West is actually an ancient staple of Indian and Asian culture for a couple of millenia. A couple of hundred years BCE, turmeric became a staple in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda means “science of life” and is essentially an ancient and holistic system of healing that has been kept alive to this day.

The main principles of Ayurveda are:

  1. The mind and body have an inseparable link to one another.
  2. The mind has significant power in being able to transform the body.

According to Ayurveda, to be free from illness you must expand upon your own awareness so that your mind can aid your body in bringing it into balance. With the body in balance, it is easier to keep the mind in balance. Think that’s preposterous? Ask yourself why it is people feel so relaxed after getting a massage? The body is loosened up, blood is flowing, and this helps create a spacious and open mindstate conducive to relaxation.

One of the critical factors of Ayurvedic practice is strengthening your digestive power. Modern science can tell us that digestion is often the first thing interrupted by high stress, inflammation in the body, and physical tension as well. Interestingly, turmeric (and by extension, curcumin) is well known for treating indigestion, reducing inflammation in the body and you could argue that these will have a net effect of making you feel relaxed over time in ways you may not realize since it is gradual.

The Health Benefits of Curcumin

Turmeric root is a potent spice and holistic medicinal root that houses the powerful compound curcumin. Curcumin has been proven to be a powerful natural anti-inflammatory compound. Inflammation has been studied recently and is thought to be linked to an array of diseases and illnesses that occur due to the damage that our immune system may cause to ourselves in the false search for invading bacteria. A common misconception is that inflammation is a bad thing entirely—it’s not, much like a fever, it’s your body’s response to invading pathogens. However, if you have a constant low-grade inflammation in your body, then you can have unnecessary activity of white blood cells that are summoned and have nothing to do and so eventually they can start attacking your own tissues. This is what leads to medical complications.

Interestingly, given the discussion about the origins of turmeric’s uses in Ayurveda, studies have shown that curcumin has amazing benefits when dealing with depression. The theory is that some forms of depression are linked to a reduced level of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). It just so happens that curcumin boosts BDNF levels, which can aid in reversing some of these changes brought on by a BDNF deficiency.
